After a panel presentation, panelists (and others) will act as coordinators for small group discussion of all the issues raised.
PROJECT OVERVIEW

      Secondary learning materials in the most commonly taught languages of French, German and Spanish often portray females in less capable, less significant roles. In most cases, little or no information is included on women who have lived their own lives, expressed themselves fully and fearlessly and exerted as much influence as they could -- whether in dealing with kings and emperors, or in the fields of art, science, letters or the theater. Outstanding males in other cultures are commonly recognized and studied; outstanding females are recognized on a limited basis or not at all. Supplementary units and materials are needed to raise student awareness and eliminate sex bias in the study of other cultures. A WORLD OF WOMEN has been designed and funded to help fill the void.

[image: centered, logo of Minneapolis Board of Education, black square, white circle inside with black letters MPS inside]

OBJECTIVES

Reinforcing the commitment of the State, the Minnesota Legislature has appropriated funds to help local districts and communities research innovative and cost-effective ways to improve elementary and secondary education.

The funds are administered by a 19-member State Council on Quality Education (CQE). Annually, the Council accepts proposals from educators and lay persons to improve local schooling. The proposals are reviewed on four criteria: innovativeness, cost effectiveness, educational significance, and procedural feasibility.

After careful examination, the Council recommends funding to the State Board of Education for these projects it believes will make the best use of State monies in improving education.

For more information on the Council and its programs, contact:

CQE
722 Capitol Square Building
St. Paul, MN 55101
612/296-5072
</text>
